About this time-traveller (Isa AU info)
Apr. 8th, 2012 10:31 amIsa was born in a world similar to modern Earth, with modern technology and no magic (at least, as far as everybody believes). Speaking of beliefs, in that world it's said that one shouldn't touch strange stardust that comes from a strange meteorshower called Lost Night that happens once every hundred years. Otherwise, one will be lost to the world. Some people speculate that it's just a yet unexplained astronomical phenomena and that that is why that night always lasts exactly five hours no matter the time of the year for no logical reason. Many people throughout the history attempted to study the matter, but they all disappeared, reinforcing the, as most people call it, superstition, so nowadays there aren't many who would attempt it.
Isa knows Lea since they were babies, as they parents were friends. Isa and Lea were four years old during a Lost Night. Lea's mother locked him in his room, knowing that he might do something dangerous because of curiosity no matter how much she forbade him. However, Lea sneaked out of his room and came to Isa with his plan to discover the mysteries of the universe. Isa went along with it only because the thought of Lea disappearing really scared him and he wanted to stop his best friend from doing anything.
Which was easier said than done. In the end, they both touched the stardust - and both disappeared into nothingness, or at least that's what they thought for something that could be a moment or eternity. After that freaky experience, they appeared somewhere else and after a few hours of utter confusion (and adjusting to the fact that their vision changed and they now saw the world in black and white), discovered that they travelled in time and space. And very soon, they did again. Lea said they'll return home next travel. Or the one after that. Isa replied that sure, they will, and he really very much wanted to believe it. Somehow, both of them saying that they'll land at home soon became a habit.
A few weeks later (Isa counts something as a week if he slept six or seven times for at least a few hours in between doing other things) they could be reasonably sure that they only spend two to ten hours in one place before timetravelling again. Later it turned out it could sometimes be as much as fifteen hours, but never more than that. Their older selves which they sometimes meet confirmed that it's true. They met other time travellers only a few times and were told that meeting like this is very rare.
More often than not they would have no idea where and when they are, unless they could find a newspaper or something. (Isa usually makes sure that Lea doesn't always ask people where and when they are, because more often than not, being considered crazy could be dangerous. And he sometimes wonders what it would be like if their ability didn't come with magic translation no matter where they are. But it would probably be even more dangerous.)
The intervals between being in some concrete place were always uncomfortable no matter how many times it happened to them. It always felt like not existing for who knows how long. And worst of all, it's impossible to be really prepared, as travelling happens unexpectedly (even if you think you expect it every minute of your life).
They usually had a luck to travel together for the first few years , only sometimes separating for a several travels, but quickly finding each other again. But one time when they were probably around eight years old or so (they still age more or less normally, not counting the intervals) they landed in different places and times. And then, they didn't find each other for approximately four years, which was even more terrible than they could imagine beforehand.
Fortunately, they somehow found each other in the same point in spacetime again. And they both know better since that time than count on such miracle occuring again if they separate. So after discovering that they always land in the same place if they touch, they always touch each other at least a little or at least stand so close to each other that they might as well be touching.
Isa never talks with people other than Lea (or yonger/older himself) more than stricly necessary, because, really, what's the point? The only one who's real in his world is Lea, everybody alse is just a random passerby who might as well not exist as he'll probably never see them again. But he doesn't stop Lea from chatting with anybody and everybody they meet and making as many friends as possible every time in few hours unless it seems too dangerous, as his best friend insists that he's going to be remembered all across the spacetime.
They never talked of those years when they were separated and probably never will. Isa sometimes wonders if Lea had an easier time of it, seeing as he doesn't seem to have problem with having many temporary friends, so it's not like he was ever alone. But Lea is still Lea, because he still remembers to say their little fairytale about returning home and staying there for a week, no, ever for a month or someday staying in some place for a week if they want to, even when Isa forgets to say anything about it, makes Isa really glad.
______________
Appearance-wise, the only differences from other Isas his age would be that he has a lot noticable scars, bruises, and scraches - on his arms, hands and back mainly, but also on legs. (Nothing on his face for now.) He's also a bit thinner and will eat anything that's edible gladly.
Update:
When Isa was 16/17 years old (though it's hard to tell when one time travels, though Isa and Lea still age rather normally while they are in any world or time) he got separated from Lea accidently for four days. It wouldn't be too bad, but... something happened. Something that shook Isa's worldview and his self-image to the core and which for a moment made him want to die. That is, he witnessed - he's rather sure of it, even if not 100% sure - a future himself murdering a future Lea. Though he knows that alternate timelines exist, what with being an experienced time traveller and all - but who would take chances?
When he reunited with Lea after four days of silent horror and wondering what to do, he didn't tell him anything. Because Lea never saw it - so why should he know? (Why should he make Lea hate him, when he already decided to change that future?) He tried to act as if everything was alright and failed miserably at that.
Two weeks later, they found themselves in an interesting world full of magic. And of mages ready to take apprentices or just teach spells to curious youths. And Isa took a chance. Secretly, as if he was commiting a crime - he felt as if it was a crime. Because there is a price to pay for every spell to work, in that world. Isa managed to use a spell which was supposed to make sure he'd never land in the same time space as his version of Lea again. Never. The cost... well, he doesn't really remember anything save the most recent week right now. Always. In other words, he also doesn't really remember his best friend.
